Taos, New Mexico – Day 6

IMG_0372 (Medium)

Today has been a rough day to say the least! Last night around 11:30pm M started vomiting. Around 1:30am she kept vomiting only every 30 minutes until 5:30am. We both probably got 30 mins sleep total that last night. Poor baby didn’t want anything to eat and couldn’t even hold down water. She looked so weak and tired, but finally rested with me most of the morning. Around noon she still couldn’t hold down water so we called a local vets office who made an appointment for us to come in at 2:30pm.

The office is small, but everyone was really friendly. The vet informed us that it seemed like M had a bleeding stomach ulcer most likely caused by getting a hold of a high dose of ibuprofen. My heart sank! We don’t take that kind of medicine so she must have found it on the floor of the rental house we where in. I can’t stress the importance of if you rent a place that is pet friendly even if  you don’t have a pet and drop any kind of medication be sure you let the owner know that you could not find the pill you dropped. The vet said M’s heart rate was double what it should have been if we didn’t take her in she could have died. She was almost in shock and would have had to been shocked back to life. Warning signs your pet may have gotten into medicine:

  • Poor appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Black tarry stools
  • Vomiting blood
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dehydration
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • We had to leave her with the vet over night so she could be given an iv and medications to treat the ulcer.

I called at 5pm to check on her and they said she was stable and resting well. So glad we made the call to take her in and hope that we caught it in time.

It was such an odd and humbling evening. I photographed the flowers in the garden while D finished up work.

For dinner I made chicken parmesan and enjoyed a glass of wine before headed to bed early to rest up from the night before.
