Dish Society

I had high hopes for the new restaurant Dish Society that opened their second location in Houston. They have a Kentucky Derby vibe and everything is farm to table.

We started with a few appetizers to share crispy pork belly bites $8.50 (crispy texas pork belly, pecans, maple syrup, marjoram). The syrup was a nice touch and the pork belly had a lot of flavor, but I thought it was a little fatty and could have been cooked down a little more.

We also ordered the fried Texas quail $13.50 [house favorite] (fried bandera, TX whole quail, seasoned cucumbers, jalapeno mint glaze, cilantro). While it was tasty I think the price is a little high for this when quail doesn’t have much meat to it.

IMG_4823 (800x600)

One person at the table ordered the brisket stuffed sweet potato $10 [ house favorite ] (baked sweet potato stuffed with texas grass fed brisket, green onions, cheddar, & house BBQ sauce with cabbage slaw). Worth every penny and stuffed to the max with meat.

IMG_4825 (800x600)

I ordered the shrimp and grits $15 [ house favorite ] (grilled gulf shrimp with smoked gouda bacon grits & Tabasco shallot butter) Holy Hell…when they say spicy Tabasco sauce they aren’t lying! It was almost too much heat to eat and I’m glad it was around the plate and not poured all over everything.

Sad to say I probably won’t go back unless someone else in our group wants to try this place.

Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill

IMG_4441 (800x600)

Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill has been on my list to stop at for a while now. I’m glad we finally got a chance to stop. After reading a lot of reviews it’s the must go to spot for brunch on the weekend. Another tip get there before they open there’s always a wait. We went early on Sunday for lunch.

Most places put bread on the table, this one does a flavored popcorn. How genius is that?! For one, my son was in hogs heaven! I’m pretty sure he ate 3 by himself!

IMG_4430 (800x600)IMG_4431 (800x600)

For drinks we started out with a Hard Lemonade $8 and a Silvermoon Rita $8. Both where tasty and no complaints.

IMG_4432 (600x800)IMG_4434 (600x800)

We started out with trying an order of Corndog Shrimp $12. This is not worth the price at all! It was bland and not worth the price. I did really enjoy the honey mustard, blueberry swirl!

IMG_4435 (800x600)IMG_4436 (800x600)

D ordered the Green Chile Macaroni $16 (grilled chicken, corn bisque, bacon gratin). This was a great dish!

IMG_4439 (800x600)

I ordered the Backyard Chicken Sandwich $14 (pepper jack, avocado, poblano, onion, bbq sauce, egg bun). Super tender and very filling.

IMG_4438 (800x600)

Little man got an order of kids Chicken Tenders $4.95. I honestly would have eaten this myself. They where so tender and juicy I had to control myself and let him eat them.

IMG_4437 (800x600)

Overall, I would come back and try some other dishes for sure and would love to try their brunch menu everyone raves about.

Hyde Park Bar and Grill

IMG_4115 (800x600)
There’s 2 locations for this restaurant so be sure to check out their website before heading out to see which one is closer for you. Hyde Park Bar and Grill is a cool trendy place, but when you walk in it was kind of a time warp. It looked like an old home redone to be a restaurant that needed some updating although their menu is nice an modern, it was a weird mash up.
We decided to venture out of our comfort zone and try some new cocktails. We got a Mojito $8 (Cana Brava rum, soda, lime, sugar) Moscow Mule $8 (Aylesbury Duck vodka, lime, ginger brew). The mojito was not very good it was way too sweet. I never had a Moscow Mule so I can’t really comment on it.
IMG_4110 (600x800)IMG_4103 (600x800)
One of the things online was to make sure you get the fries $4.99. While they where good it was the dipping sauce they make that was really good.
 IMG_4101 (800x600)IMG_4102 (800x600)
D is a lover of the onion rings so we got an order of them too. They where piping hot, but nice thick and fat rings. SOUR CREAM & ONION RINGS $5.99 (chicken fried onions, sour cream dip, scallion)
IMG_4105 (800x600)IMG_4106 (600x800)
I ordered the CHICKEN FRIED CHICKEN $11.99 (your choice of an thinly sliced Akaushi beef cutlet or tender chicken breast, buttermilk dipped, breaded and slow fried then served with black pepper cream gravy, mashed potatoes and your choice of one side) For the sides I got the mac and cheese homemade cheese sauce tossed with macaroni pasta, finished with potato crumbs. I shared with our child, and it was a big hit for the 2 of us. Their chicken is really moist and I really enjoyed the coating.
IMG_4108 (800x600)
I also got a side of JALAPENO CORNBREAD $1.99 (sweet jalapeƱo cornbread served with a mild green chile butter) Totally worth ordering it’s so good, but ours seemed a little over baked.
IMG_4109 (800x600)
D ordered the PORK & MAC $12.99 (slow roasted pork shoulder served atop creamy mac & cheese with tangy sweet pickled peppers, soft boiled egg and cilantro). This wasn’t a wow dish for me, but he really enjoyed it.
IMG_4107 (800x600)
Also don’t forget to take a picture with the giant fork outside!
IMG_4114 (600x800)
Would I go back? Sure, I would try a couple different items on the menu and give them another chance.

Muishi Makirritos

IMG_3972

We happened to be down at the zoo today and swung by for a quick lunch before heading back home. Muishi Makirritos was on my watch list since I saw them on Eat Street.

IMG_3973

My friend had never eaten at a food truck before so this was exciting for me to show her that they have tons of different flavor trucks on the road.

We ordered a few items to share and try. I have to say the biggest let down was the hot mess fries $7. They ran out of kimchi and had to sub pico de gallo. Not sure how to rate this one ok, but really wanted kimchi.

IMG_3976 (800x600)

My friend got the Pork Bunz $7 (2 fried or steamed bunz with 24 hour sous vide belly, pickled cucumbers, green onions) She said the buns where a little greasy but the flavor was really good and she would order it again.

IMG_3974 (800x600)

Kakuni roll $8.50 (24 hour sous vide pork belly, fried shiitake and oyster mushrooms, avocado, cabbage, with creamy cilantro sauce) Loved the texture and the tenderness of the pork belly. The oysters had so much flavor, just order this you won’t be disappointed!

IMG_3978 (800x600)IMG_3979 (600x800)

The Krabby Patty $12 (Katsu soft shell krab, avocado, kani, cabbage, with sweet creamy wasabi sauce) was featured on the show and I knew I had to try this. OMG is it good!

IMG_3980 (800x600)

I would love to try more items from these guys and maybe their kimchi if they don’t run out!

Wokker TX Ranger

Wokker TX Ranger is an Asian BBQ fusion truck. You can find them on Facebook HERE or on Twitter to see where they’ll be. They happened to be out at No Label Brewing and we swung by while in the area. Normally you have to pay to get in to get to the food trucks, but we looked up the food trucks phone number and they texted us a picture of the menu then took our order and brought it to the gate. Super great customer service!

IMG_3497 (450x800)

We ordered the Spicy Ribs $6. I have to say for 2 ribs I don’t really think this was worth it. They where tender, but lacked flavor.

IMG_3494 (800x600)

On the other hand the Brisket Pad Thai $9 is fantastic! I would eat this over and over again.

IMG_3495 (800x600)

The Pork Belly Fried Rice $9 was good, just not as good as the Pad Thai They had a really good flavorful fried rice that out shined the pork belly.

IMG_3496 (800x600)

I’m a little split if I would hunt this truck down again. If they where around I would for sure order the Pad Thai.

Bernie’s Burger Bus

IMG_3281 (800x600)

We’ve heard a lot of hype about Bernie’s Burger Bus and thought since we where in town we would give them a try. They’re known for great burgers and they are a huge mess so instead of hitting up the food truck we would try their new brick and mortar location.

Inside is decorated with a giant bus as their grill area and complete with a patio area. The menus have all the popular school lingo as names of their dishes.

IMG_3282 (800x600)IMG_3285 (800x600)IMG_3286 (800x600)

IMG_3283 (800x600)IMG_3284 (800x600)

We ordered a RECESS (GRILLED CHEESE) $6.75 a local sourdough bread grilled cheese with cheddar for our little one. I have to say I would totally eat this on my own and it was one of the best grilled cheese’s I’ve ever eaten!

IMG_3291 (800x600)

I ordered the HOMEROOM $10.25 (cheddar cheeseburger, crispy bacon, “tipsy” onions, chipotle aioli, and topped with a fried egg) I just like a good messy burger with fried egg….who doesn’t?

IMG_3287 (800x600)

D ordered the THE PRINCIPAL $9.50 (classic burger with a choice of cheese, all homemade mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, thin sliced onions, pickles, shredded lettuce, and slow roasted garlic tomatoes)

IMG_3290 (800x600)

We also ordered CHILI CHEESE FRIES $6.25 homemade chili, cheddar, chipotle aioli, and green onions TRUFFLE-LACED FRIES $4.50 with Italian white truffle oil, Parmesan, and green onions. Both items where fantastic and I would order them again.

IMG_3288 (800x600)IMG_3289 (800x600)

I can’t wait till they open their new location in Katy, Texas. This is a great place with great burgers! The burgers are a little more pricey so it won’t be an all the time go to place, but when you want a good gourmet burger they are pretty tasty!
